Oleta River State Park and Sandspur Island

August 25, 2009

Unknowingly to many Floridians, there are many ways to get to a secluded island without the need of hiring a private charter or knowing someone with a boat.

One can head to Oleta River State Park (3400 NE 163rd St., Sunny Isles Beach, FL) to rent bikes and kayaks ($20 per hour). It is the largest urban park in the state of Florida.

Sandspur Island is gorgeous, serene island where one can escape from the bustling and hustling of the Miami city. Sure, one would love to get pampered by the private charters but it’s another thing to be able to row through the mangroves where you can see the beautiful Florida wildlife, get close to the boats anchored in the middle of the bay, get a chance to see a manatee or dolphins, or to your own private island with a beach. You may even get a chance to meet with other boaters and kayakers, befriend them, and score a drink or six.
