Escopazzo Restaurant

January 11, 2010

Where can I start with Escopazzo? It is located right in the heart of South Beach (1311 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL). You would think it would be loud like the rest of the area, but in the midst of the chaos, there is this very intimate, quiet restaurant. They are known for their wine list and their 100% organic, vegan/vegetarian friendly menu. This place can only seat 25-30 people at any given time so do make your reservations.

As I stated above, their wine list is very extensive and well priced, so take your time and ask any questions you may have. The waiters are well-mannered and know their wines as well.

Although they have a 5 and a 7 course menu with an optional wine pairing, we opted to order things a la carte. We started off with two appetizers. The first, an asparagus flan with fontina and provola cheese sauce, seasonal mushrooms, and white truffle infused oil ($19); it looks exactly like a flan with green asparagus bits. On top of it were two very tasty mushrooms which work very well with the flan and the white truffle infused oil. The second, an eggplant timbale filled with eggplant bits, tomato, basil, mozzarella, parmigiano and Genovese style pesto ($18); this to be honest, I like more than the flan.

The entrees came next, we ordered, a celebration of the Lombardy region ($26) and a striped Atlantic bass ($33). The celebration of the Lombardy region consisted of tortelli stuffed with pumpkin, ricotta cheese crumbled Saronno’s Amaretto cookies, spicy fruit mustard in a velvet truffle infused cream sauce, otherwise known as amazing vegetarian raviolis that melted in your mouth. I couldn’t remember the striped Atlantic bass (too much wine), although, I remember it being cooked perfectly, the bass flaked off and melted upon touching your tongue.

Finally, we ordered a desert, the espresso crème brulee. Although, nothing too special, the desert was what it was a crème brulee with espresso flavor.

Escopazzo is definitely a romantic, intimate place to go with someone on a special day. The food is delicious, the wine list is plentiful, and the service is amazing.
