Tarpon Feeding at Robbie’s of Islamorada

January 27, 2010

Freaking out!

Ever feed a tarpon? Do you even know what a tarpon is? Basically, they are giant fish with a giant mouth. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, these fish can grow up to 8 feet long and 280 pounds, and live for up to 50 years.

At Robbie’s of Islamorada (77522 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL 33036), for a $1 per person and entrance fee, and $2 for a bucket of herring, you can have a chance to feed these harmless fish. You get to the dock, and lay on your stomach with a herring hanging off your hand, a couple of inches from the water. With a little courage and patience, a tarpon will jump in the air and grab the herring from your hand. It is a breathtaking and exciting feeling when these gigantic fish grab the herring from your hand.

Wait, what happened?

Watch out for the pelicans, they’ll stick their beaks into your bucket and run off with the herring!
