Sweden – Oslo (Days 14 – 16)

August 18, 2010

Day 14 (8/14/2010):

We successfully jumped on our train towards Oslo today. However, since the tracks were in need of repair, we were asked to get off the train, onto a bus, which then drove us on an hour ride to another train station, just to jump back on. If this was the US, the train company would have said, ‘The train is broke, tough luck, wait 15 hours until we fix it.’

Oslo is a small city compared to Stockholm or Copenhagen but still a very beautiful city. We got to our host, Maria’s amazing apartment in the old town of Oslo. Since we haven’t gone out for a while, we ended up going out partying, drinking until 5 AM. I’d talk about what we did but everything was a blur. All I remember is jumping around to crazy polka music at one point. Maybe Wagner will talk more about it.

Day 15 (8/15/2010):

We slept in for the first time and headed towards Norway’s favorite beach at Huk. We did a small workout and Wagner jumped into the water. After coming back into the city, we did a walk around the National Theatre area and Karl Johan Gate (Street). Nothing too interesting to talk about as we were both very tired.

Rule #30: McDonald’s has free wi fi internet.

I touched Wagner’s underwear today while doing the laundry. We are breaking fine lines. We ended up cooking a giant feast of pan seared chicken, homemade pasta, spinach salad with avocado and cucumbers, and caramelized onions and peppers. Wagner, Maria, and I all had enough for lunch the next day.

Day 16 (8/16/2010):

I have realized that my blog posts have gotten short, therefore I will be trying to make extra effort in writing a bit more of our hectic amazing race. We woke up early (6 AM) today to head out to Flam to get on the scenic train ride from Myrdal to Flam. When we got to the train station, we found out that the tickets for reservations were sold out. Like good Americans, we asked for other alternative options. The lady told us to talk to the train conductor and see what that person says.

Rule #108: Paying 10 Norweigan krones (~$1.50) to urinate is not worth it.

We met up with our train conductor, who was this very husky, Nordic lady with red hair and asked her if there were any spots on the train. She immediately told us to jump in one of the seats in a specific car. Surprisingly, there was another American that was in the same predicament as us and he ended up sitting in front of us. As the train conductor came around, she looked at our EU rail passes and let us stay on for free!

We were dropped off at Myrdal to get on the Flam railway down to Flam. Words cannot describe the beauty of the nature that can be seen from the Flam railway. We will try to put up pictures as soon as possible.  We got lucky and did not have to pay on the way down again due to the EU rail passes.

I think Wagner and I officially hate all tourists. I think they are rude and have some sort of entitlement which makes them subhuman.

Our ride back to Oslo was entertaining. We were seated in the back of the train in the family section. There was a family with 5 little African kids that were running around and making a ruckus. At one point, there were 2 girls in front of us that were eating cookies; one of the little rascals went up to them and offered to trade his hat for a cookie. The Swedish girl responded ‘Don’t feed it.’ Soon after, the same rascal started to use Wagner’s elbow as a towel after consuming massive amounts of Extreme Spice Doritos.  After they left, the train looked like a battlefield. There were back pillows missing in many of the seats that they were sitting on.

We ended up getting home around 11 PM. We wanted to take a shower however, our host and her sister were already sleeping and in order to reach the bathroom, one had to go through her bedroom, so we felt bad and did not want to do that. Wagner at some point asks me, ‘Do you want to try to take a shower in the sink?’ My answer to that was to take a hit for the night and go to sleep.
