Buying a Suit in Hoi An

March 10, 2011

Boats on the River Going Through Hoi An

Hoi An is a beautiful city with foreign influences from the 16th and 17th century which can still be seen today. In fact, it is probably one of the few places in Vietnam where one can still see buildings older than the Vietnam War. (The two sides of the war agreed not to bring death and destruction to the city). It is now listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Strangely enough, Hoi An is known for its tailors. As of 2011, there are more than 400 tailors! So what can I say? Who do you choose? Well, if you’re from New York City, it’s like choosing your favorite pizza place. Once you find it, stick with it. For those without one, I completely recommend Yaly. Yeah, I know it costs a little more, but the quality is good and they can usually turn around anything within 2-3 days (including alterations).

Here are a couple of things, I suggest, wherever you go:

–       Bring a copy whether it is a picture or a piece of clothing to the tailor. They can reproduce that style!

–       The more you know what you want in your clothing, the easier the process is.

–       Give yourself at least 2-3 days. Sometimes it takes one or two alterations before the clothes are ready.

–       Whatever you do, do NOT go buy custom made shoes. Not only have I talked to many people, my girlfriend got something that looked like the dog from Sandlot chewed it and spit it out.
